What to Expect from the Baited Shark Dive

The Durban shark scuba dive takes place just off the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, in warm, nutrient-rich waters known for attracting various shark species. After launching from the Umkomaas River, divers are taken to a carefully chosen site where a bait drum is used to draw sharks in safely and respectfully, offering divers an incredible opportunity to observe the sharks in their natural environment.

This is a mid-water dive with no cages involved. You’ll hover around the bait drum at depths between 8 to 15 meters, watching as sharks circle gracefully, often coming within arm’s reach. It’s an open ocean experience that focuses on responsible interaction and minimal environmental impact.

Shark Species You Might See Scuba Shark Diving In Durban

Durban’s waters are home to several shark species, but the baited dive commonly attracts the Oceanic Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus limbatus).
